India is to achieve 80% literacy rate by 2015: Govt; Times of India, July 18, 2013


NEW DELHI: India is to achieve 80% literacy rate in the next two years. This was stated by the HRD minister, MM PallamRaju, while inaugurating an international conference on achieving literacy for all. The literacy rate of India is 73% at present as per the 2011 Census. Raju said that more than 20 crore people have become literates since the last Census of 2001 out of which more than half of them are females. To achieve the goal of 80% literacy by 2015, the minister said that the HRD Ministry is restructuring the entire adult education system in the country with a paradigm shift to lifelong education. He announced that an appropriate administrative and if required legislative process will be initiated to integrate formal, non-formal and informal learning and to formally recognize forms of education other than formal. He clarified that recognition, validation and accreditation of learning obtained through adult education will be formalized by setting up equivalency framework.

NEW DELHI: Human resources development minister Pallam Raju visited Melbourne on Thursday and met with Louise Asher, minister for innovation, services and small business, minister for tourism and major events and minister for employment and trade. The two ministers discussed education initiatives in order to boost Victoria - India bilateral relations. They had previously met in New Delhi when Asher led a Super Trade Mission to India in March 2013. Raju is currently visiting Australia leading a delegation of Indian vice chancellors and sector skill council representatives, to explore potential educational partners and thereby enhancing the vocational education portfolio in India. During his visit to Melbourne, Raju meet with senior government representatives, Victorian vice chancellors and TAFE Directors. Raju also attended a roundtable at the Asia Education Foundation.

NEW DELHI: The University of Chicago Booth School of Business will relocate its Asia Executive MBA Programme from Singapore to Hong Kong in a move to expand and strengthen the school's presence and influence across the region, while continuing a robust presence in Singapore. Beginning in 2014, Chicago Booth's faculty will begin teaching MBA classes at the new location to corporate and organisational leaders from across Asia, North America and Europe. Other programming, including research, entrepreneurship, remote teaching, custom executive training and alumni events, will expand to Hong Kong, even as activities continue in Singapore.

NEW DELHI: India will substantially increase the number of students in higher education in next seven years. The presentation made by the HRD ministry to the Consultatative Committee expressed that Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan (RUSA) will increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) from 18% to 30%. The scheme estimated to cost Rs 99,000 crore will include other existing schemes in the sector. The highlight of the scheme will be that central funding from the MHRD and UGC to institution will be through the state council of higher education as against the direct funding by the Centre and UGC to educational institutions of higher education.

NEW DELHI: The HRD minister M M Pallam Raju and visiting US secretary of state John F Kerry are to co-chair India-US Higher Education Dialogue on June 25, 2013 in New Delhi. During the dialogue, the two sides will take up research and innovation partnership under Singh-Obama Knowledge Initiative, institutional partnership and skill development as well as promotion of community colleges in India and technology enabled education including massive open online courses. IIT - Bombay is entering into an MoU with Edx. The intended outcome also includes two-way students' mobility from India to USA and vice-versa. India and US will also take up linkage between industry and academia and faculty development. They are also expected to take up issues like post doctoral research and co-operation in training for the school teachers.

NEW DELHI: Believe it or not, researchers at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras have developed a unique method where one can construct a two-bedroom house of 800 square feet for a cost of just Rs 10 lakh. The researchers from the civil engineering department have been working on the project for over a decade and have constructed a two-storey building to showcase the technology they developed to build rapid, cost-effective mass housing using glass fibre reinforced gypsum (GFRG) panels.

NEW DELHI: New statistics released by Unesco show that 57 million children were out of out of school in 2011; a drop of just two million from the year before. Compounding this problem for children around the world is a new data analysis showing that aid to basic education has decreased for the first time since 2002. In India alone there were 1.7 million out of school children by 2010 data (there is no new data for 2011). Using the latest data produced by the Unesco Institute for Statistics (UIS) India has moved up a position from third bottom place in 2004-2006 for the most out of school children to fourth bottom place in 2011 (Ethiopia took its place).
