IIIT-D develops system that monitors, analyses real-world events online, Times of India, May 28, 2013


NEW DELHI: Researchers at the IIIT-D have come up with a new system called MultiOSN, which has been monitoring multiple online social media during real-world events, including the just-concluded IPL series, and presenting an analysis in real-time. The system swiftly provides basic, but crucial information floating all over the web of online social media, about real-world events, according to the researchers at Precog@IIITD, a research group working on online social media, led by professor Ponnurangam Kumaraguru.

MHRD approves setting up of block institutes for teachers education, Times of India, May 24, 2013


NEW DELHI: The human resource development ministry has approved the setting up of block institutes of teachers education in 196 districts during the current five-year Plan. These institutes will be opened in SC/ ST/ minority concentrated districts. More than Rs 690 crore have been approved with one-third of this investment being made in eight high deficit states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Assam, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Madhya Pradesh.

NEW DELHI: The job market continues to improve for graduate business school degree holders, as more employers plan to hire MBAs and specialised business master's talent than did so last year, according to the 2013 Corporate Recruiters Survey. The survey was issued on Wednesday by the Graduate Management Admission Council and its survey partners, the European Foundation for Management Development and the MBA Career Services Council. A companion student exit survey, the 2013 Global Management Education Graduate Survey, shows that similar to last year, six in 10 business school graduates already had job offers in February or March.

Seventeen developing countries could pay to provide education for 86% of their out-of-school children or 42% of their out of school adolescents if they managed their revenues from natural resources better. An additional US$5 billion in funding for education could be raised from these 17 countries annually if 30% of income from their minerals and 75% from their oil and gas was converted into public revenue and 20% of this sum invested in education.

Sexual offences against children in India have reached an epidemic proportion and a large number of them are being committed in the juvenile justice homes run and aided by the Government of India. This had been revealed in the report "India's Hell Holes: Child Sexual Assault in Juvenile Justice Homes" by the Asian Centre for Human Rights (ACHR). The report has been submitted in advance to the UN special rapporteur on violence against women, Rashida Manjoo, who is conducting an official visit to India from April 22 to May 1, 2013.

UNESCO urges world leaders to reduce funding gap, help meet 2015 Education for All deadline, Times of India, March 20, 2013


NEW DELHI: New calculations by UNESCO's Education for All Global Monitoring Report reveal that the $16 billion annual external funding gap to achieve basic education in low-income countries by the 2015 target date has widened to $26 billion over the last three years. This gap chiefly affects the achievement of universal primary education, the second Millennium Development Goal. The data is published in a policy paper released ahead of a decisive global consultation on education in the post-2015 development agenda in Dakar, Senegal on March 18-19.
